Building Leaders in the Great Outdoors
This past weekend, from March 14th to 16th, 2025, the cadets of 604 Moose Squadron embarked on an exhilarating Field Training Exercise (FTX) at Camp Kasota East, nestled near the picturesque Sylvan Lake in Alberta. Despite a slightly delayed start due to some cadets arriving late at the Armoury, the excitement was palpable as the squadron set off for their outdoor adventure.Embracing the Elements
The cadets were greeted by a winter wonderland, with snow falling throughout the weekend. This unexpected weather added an extra layer of challenge and beauty to the experience. The cadets, all decked out in their Field Training Uniforms (FTUS), quickly adapted to the conditions, demonstrating the resilience and adaptability that are hallmarks of the Air Cadet program.A roaring fire became the heart of the camp, burning throughout the day and providing a warm gathering spot for the cadets. This central fire not only offered physical warmth but also became a symbol of camaraderie and shared experience.
Nourishment for Body and Spirit
The menu for the weekend was a mix of practical and delightful.Meals Ready to Eat (MREs) provided sustenance for breakfasts and lunches, giving cadets a taste of field rations. Saturday evening, however, was a culinary highlight with burritos overflowing with meat, a welcome hot meal after a day of
activities. The night concluded on a sweet note with hot chocolate topped with marshmallows and the comfort of Dad's Cookies, a perfect end to an action-packed day.
Learning Through Experience
The FTX was not just about camping; it was a comprehensive learning experience. Level 5 cadets took the lead in teaching essential skills: Knot tying lessons: Mastering various knots, crucial for both outdoor survival and teamwork exercises. Orienteering and navigation: Learning to read maps, use compasses, and navigate through unfamiliar terrain. These peer-led sessions exemplify the leadership development inherent in the cadet program, where senior cadets pass on their knowledge and experience to junior members.Night Adventures and Team Building
As darkness fell, the excitement ramped up with the "Ghost Stick" game. Cadets had to locate hidden sticks while evading capture by officers and senior cadets, a thrilling exercise in stealth, strategy, and teamwork. This activity, along with the ghostly stories shared about a mysterious sighting by senior cadets (a playful prank to add some spice to the experience), created lasting memories and strengthened bonds among the squadron members. The Importance of Preparation
The chilly weather served as a valuable lesson in the importance of proper preparation. Some cadets found themselves underprepared, lacking gloves or adequate cold-weather gear. This experience underscored the necessity of thorough planning and appropriate equipment for outdoor activities, a lesson that extends far beyond cadet training into many aspects of life.
The Benefits of Field Training Exercises
FTXs like this one are crucial components of the Air Cadet program, offering numerous benefits:- Practical Skill Development:Cadets learn and apply survival skills, navigation techniques, and outdoor living practices in a real-world setting.
